Terralite Launches with New Coconut Wax Candles

Terralite Coconut Wax Candles Designed from the Wick Up to Be Clean Burning, All Natural and Made from Sustainable Ingredients

ENCINITAS, California—October 8, 2013—Terralite™ coconut wax candles are hand poured into recycled glass containers and scented with fair-trade organic essential oils. They are now available both online and at the Leucadia farmers market on the first Sunday of each month.

Terralite started as a small home project that began when owners Jessica Waters, a visual journalist who focuses on environmental issues and her partner Justin Puda, a motion graphics artist and owner of a creative agency called Rocket Lab, began looking into how candles were made.

“I was really surprised at how something so small and historically prevalent could be made with so many harmful ingredients today. We’re continuously discovering just how many things are made with wax or oil, not just candles but cleaning products, cosmetics, art supplies and so much more. It occurred to us that we can make most of these things ourselves and use better ingredients that keep our health and environment in mind,” said Jessica Waters, Terralite Co-Founder and Candlemaker. “Companies who value fair trade and sustainable resources have really set the standard for us when thinking about bringing a product to market. We don’t want our candles to be just another thing that contributes to waste or environmental concerns, we are really hoping coconut wax will be the start of a sustainable solution.”

Waxes are naturally produced by many plants and animals, such as soy wax, palm or beeswax but a majority of commercial candles today are actually made from a byproduct of refined petroleum called paraffin wax.

While researching alternative candles waxes, Terralite discovered that wax could be created from coconut oil. Coconut oil is extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos Nucifera).  Coconuts are considerably easy to replace compared to other waxes since the tree is left to grow and only the fruit is harvested. The coconut palm is considered a “three generation” tree, which can support a farmer, his children and his grandchildren.  One tree can live and bear fruit for up to 60 years making it a renewable resource and an optimal choice for a candle wax production.

Candles are typically enjoyed for various reasons whether a birthday celebration or to enjoy at bath time but some candles may be affecting more than your mood lighting. Paraffin wax candles have been known to release toxic fumes into the air and coupled with wicks that contain lead can create a rather poisonous environment for humans and pets. Terralite found a safe alternative with clean burning coconut wax and by using wicks with a hemp core that are braided with unbleached cotton grown locally in the US.

Most candles can either be scented by using synthetic fragrances primarily designed to mimic a smell that is natural in our environment or through the use of essential oils, which are extracted from plants and fruits. Synthetic fragrances are considered safe to use, however, they don’t release the aromatherapy benefits of natural oils such as Terralite’s Cool Evergreen, a blend of eucalyptus and peppermint oils which are both known to open bronchial airways and purify the air.

“Can’t wait to support this company that shares all my values and is local to me. See you at the Leucadia Farmers Market!” says Angela of Encinitas, CA.
